  4. FreeDial dials your Internet provider, logs in and sets up the Internet
  5. software on the RISC OS side. All important setups are grouped in one simple
  6. dialogue box, and you can simply select or edit one of the available choices
  7. from pop-up menus. FreeDial can be used with any Internet software but is
  8. currently only supplied with a FreeNet and an Acorn DCI4 configuration.

  10. Installation procedure:
  11. - Copy !FreeDial in a directory where it can find !FreeNet and !FreeUser or
  12.   !Internet.
  13. - Run either FNInstall or AInstall
  14. - Start !FreeDial and use the menus for its configuration
  15.  
  16. If Internet is new to you, read the 'Install' file for a very detailed
  17. description of internet software installation.

  19. To install FreeDials configuration for use with either of the supported
  20. stacks, locate the !FreeUser or !Internet application and run the FNInstall
  21. or AInstall file. Note that the only difference is the directory in which the
  22. FreeDial configuration files are stored. Since !Internet and !FreeNet both
  23. define the same variables, you should not have both booted. Read the end of
  24. this file if you are upgrading from a previous version of FreeDial.

  26. The Install files expect the default FreeUser or Internet applications as
  27. found in the FreeNet or AcornDCI4 distribution. You don't need to edit any
  28. of the files in these as FreeDial will handle the configuration. The Install
  29. file will NOT overwrite any of the standard files in !FreeUser or !Internet.

  31. FreeDial needs the SerialBuffer module and SerialDeviceDriver 0.22 to work
  32. with the internal serial port. If you don't have them, get them from
  33. ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk or where you got the FreeNet software. High speed
  34. serial links need these utilities to work reliably.

  36. Now you can just start FreeDial and configure it. Use the Help application
  37. and read the !Help file for more information.

  40. Upgrade from version 0.22
  41. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  42. FreeDial 0.22 refused to redial after a BUSY attempt, this is fixed now. The
  43. -dial option didn't work either and does now.

  45. FreeDial 0.23 introduces an !OnLine script in the Stack support directory.
  46. This Obey script contains commands which are executed after every
  47. successfull login with that stack. The supplied !OnLine scripts generate
  48. Call logging and locate the !ShutDown file. You should remove these commands
  49. from your provider login script if they where there. Your 0.22 configuration
  50. should work with this version. You don't have to run the Install file. If
  51. you want the additional supported providers, you have to copy them out of
  52. the !FDInstall.FreeDial.Providers directory yourself.

  54. Upgrade from a version before 0.22

  56. There were some problems with the dial code which should be fixed now.

  58. FreeDial 0.22 introduces a country hierarchy for provider configurations.
  59. This means that the directory structure is changed. The FNInstall or
  60. AInstall file will upgrade your previous configurations to this new structure
  61. as well as installing the new configurations. Your previous configurations
  62. are placed in the 'v021' country and can be moved from there by editing the
  63. country name in the FreeDial Provider setup.

  65. FreeNet 0.22 supports stack selection from the frontend, and the stack should
  66. no longer be started from the script file. FreeDial starts the selected stack
  67. before dialling and defines 'InetStack$Path' to point to a directory with
  68. driver start scripts for the selected stack. Your previous scripts should
  69. still work but it is better to change them, typically:

  77. You can then remove the StartSLIP and StartPPP files from the !FreeUser
  78. driectory if you wish. Now the script will work with either FreeNet or Acorn
  79. Internet.
